Description of the building: The Eden Project is a visitor attraction in the United Kingdom, including the world's largest greenhouse. Inside the artificial biomes are plants that are collected from all around the world.

The complex comprises a number of domes that house plant species from around the world, each dome emulating a natural biome. The domes are made out of hundreds of hexagons plus a few pentagons that connect the whole construction; each of these is a transparent cushion made of tough plastic. The first dome emulates a tropical environment, the second a warm temperate, Mediterranean environment.

conclusion：Solid thinking can create very smooth surface. Grasshopper, it's a plugin for Rhino, which can create design by logic and generate model step by step.

Remodeling Esplanade by Bonzai 3d and Rhino grasshopper

The building was designed by two architectural firms working in conjunction: by DP Architects (DPA) of Singapore and the London-based Michael Wilford & Partners (MWP).The design is insensitive to Singapore's location and climate as it would have created a greenhouse in the tropical climate of Singapore. According to DPA director Vikas Gore some form of shading was always intended, and a cladding of aluminum sunshades was added to the final design. The unique architectural design has been said to have an appearance similar to either a durian (a tropical fruit) or the eyes of a fly. Many Singaporeans casually refer to the Esplanade as "The Durian".

Bonzai 3d is a new 3D modeler developed to make 3D model easily, simple and quickly.The bonzaied 2.0 brings a number of new features including advanced NURBS modeling tools. According to the facade of Esplanade, this is the one way to generate 3d model.

Rhino grasshopper could be used as generating components of the Esplanade 's surface.

Remodeling Esplanade Theatre using Sketchup parametric tools and Rhino grasshopper

The Esplanade occupies the site of the former "Satay Club", a popular food haunt for Singaporeans which had been discontinued prior to the Esplanade's construction. Currently, the "Satay Club" has been re-allocated next to Sembawang Shopping Center which is now demolished.

Officially opened on October 12, 2002, Esplanade was developed at a cost of SGD 600 million.

On 5 July 2005, the opening ceremony of the 117th IOC Session was staged in the Esplanade, featuring a 30-minute long performance aimed at showcasing Singapore's multi-cultural heritage to her international audience.

The original design, presented to the public in 1994, consisted of unadorned glass cases over the theaters, and initially elicited criticisms from the public, including calling it "two copulating aardvarks"[2]. The Nakagin capsule Tower is the pioneer of capsule architecture built for actual use.

Kisho Kurokawa introduced the idea of metabolism, the architecture which based on concept “plug-in” building.
Metabolism building is designed with characters of recyclable, exchangeability, is prototype of sustainability architecture.

These capsules are clustered around two cores, each with diagonal sloping roof and pointed top. Each box shaped living unit was designed with built in stereos and calculators for single business workers.
The capsules were prefabricated complete with furniture and appliances.
Each capsule was connected to the main shafts by only 4 high tension bolt and are designed to be replaceable.

Sketchup soap bubble plugin. Used it to create the series of domes, which transfers shapes into tensile surfaces which can be applied to the physics of a dome. Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010.Conceptual massing tool.The tool newly introduced to the 2010 version enables the user to apply a set of different patterns to a specified surface.

Generating the Eden Project using Solid Edge, Sketchup and Rhino Grasshopper

The Eden Project is composed of a number of geodesic domes. These domes are made out of hundreds of hexagons.

I first used Solid Edge to draw the outlines of the volumes. Then I imported the data into Sketchup to take advantage of the Soap Skin and Bubble plugin to create the bubble form. Finally, I imported the model into Rhino Grasshopper and used a script to generate the hexagonal structure.

The museum building is split mainly for 2 uses that is emerging media and for production.

The structure is of a strip bending piling folding itself to create a floor with each change of direction the ribbon enfolds a production or presentation space on trying to combine the different users with activities and speeds.

The building is simple and seems light weight with a lot of openness and high end infrastructure.

The building is dedicated to exploring - through the vehicle of new technologies - the connection between science and art.

The interlaced production and the presentation programs each have distinct physical attributes: while the production spaces require an even distribution of natural light and artificial light for day/night work, the exhibition spaces require a high degree of light control and sound isolation. Effectively these requirements necessitate that the fluid spaces of exhibition and the fluid spaces of production each constitute a discrete building: one filled with light and one that can be darkened. The levels of these buildings appear to be "shuffled together" like a deck of cards, their qualities put into relief on the facade.

After seeing and comparing all the softwares I came to the conclusion of using Bonzai 3d as it has a flexible and user friendly interface, building and bending surfaces by making NURBS surfaces to generate the building in way that one can go ahead with more variations too is one of the main features why I decide to make this as my first choice.

Using Alibre as second software to unbend the surfaces didn’t work as Alibre has parameters which are not so flexible.

So my final option was to take it in Autocad 2010 as the the smoothening and meshing of the building can be done as the final step.

Remodelling the Zentrales Stellwerk using Sketchup Pro 7 and Grasshopper

Building brief description:
The Zentralles Stellwerk tower is a design of the architects Herzog & Meuron and consist in a sign tower for trains supervision. It is located in Basel, Switzerland and it was finished in the year 1997. The building main form characteristic is the facade of sheets of copper and the twist of the tower.
Programs used:
The modelling of the building will be generated with Sketchup pro 7 because of it simplicity to model and transform 3D regular shapes. This program is a good tool to easy solve 3D problems and allow several export extensions to keep working the model in other applications. In the case of this work, the program is useful because it allow to export as a DWG file, which is compatible with other program used in this work: Rhino 4.
To model the facade it will be use the grasshopper plug-in for Rhino 4 because of the fast and easy way to generate the louvers elements throug the components and the possibilities to live edit them. Grasshopper is a graphic algorithm editor integrated with Rhino 3D modelling.

The Eyebeam facility in Chelsea will be the city's first institution dedicated exclusively to new media art and the largest institution of its kind in the United States.The spatial logic of the proposed building is based on a simple premise: a pliable ribbon that locates production (atelier) to one side and presentation (museum/theater) to the other.
Generally, for me, there are two remarkable features that I could learn a lot from this particular architecture. First, the relationship between the ribbon envelope and the two different spaces (Production & Presentation); how the ribbon’s folding and wrapping represents the spatial quality and requirement of the two different spaces. Second, the icon ribbon itself, how it folding and changing directions fluidly, creating a fluid object to connect different spaces, not only from the function and construction point of view, but also from aesthetic point of view.

Rhino Grasshopper:
The relationship between the ribbon envelope and the two different spaces (Production & Presentation). Therefore, I decided to use rhino + grasshopper to remodel this first stage, because, as we all know, grasshopper is a popular and powerful parametric rhino plug-ins, which is based on the logic of relationships between different objects. Therefore, it’s perfect to be used here to define the relationship between the ribbon envelope and wrapped spaces.

Autodesk Inventor:
The icon ribbon itself, how it folding and changing directions fluidly, creating a fluid object to connect different spaces. Therefore, I chose Autodesk inventor to remodel the second stage, because, Autodesk Inventor is professional tools for sheet metal modeling, which has powerful metal sheet bending tools. Therefore, it’s also perfect to be used here to create the fluid icon ribbon.

Description of the building:

The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is a waterside building located on six hectares of waterfront land alongside Marina Bay near the mouth of the Singapore River, purpose-built to be the centre for performing arts for the island nation of Singapore. Taking its name from the nearby Esplanade, it contains a 1,600 seat concert hall and a 2,000 seat theatre for the performing arts. Esplanade theatre in Singapore was famous for the "durian surface". The metal facade in the top of the theatre could be turn on or turn off by electronic control.

conclusion：

Basicly speaking, using Soap Bubble which is plug in for Sketch up to creat dome or shed roof very easily and conveniently. just give what's kind of the grid you want work at and give the pressure, then u can get whatever you want. For the grasshopper, it's a plugin for Rhino which need people have good logic for creating 3D model,it's for people who are exploring new shapes using generative algorithms.

The grasshopper software concentrate on the interesting skin of the model.

Diller and Scofidio use ideas of transparency and fluidity to emphasise the inter-relatedness of materials spatial configuration and activity in creating an overall experience of the space. Technological elements are often used as a way of illustrating the social activity taking place in and around the building.

Alibre Design software is a sheet metal software which is why it was good for me to use this as Eye Beam Building requires the bending of metal parts as the structure is bending-folding as it goes higher.The option of flanging and unbending of the components by creating surfaces and these surfaces can be opened out.This was one part of the software which was effiencient and user friendly.

The part which is not so good about software is; it is too rigid and one has to have correct sizes/dimensions for each of the parts and deformations cannot be easily made in this software.

The second software i used is Autocad 2010 as my next step was to convert the structure into a solid since the building was looking very raw in alibre i decided to change and smoothen the surfaces by using subsmooth tool of the structure.

Description of the building:

The hybrid nature of the Museum of Art and Technology, both museum and production/education facility, provokes an architecture of cross-programming and spatial interweaving. The architectural concept begins with a pliable ribbon that partitions the programming; production spaces to one side (blue) and presentation spaces to the other (gray). The ribbon undulates from side to side as it climbs from the street, floor folding into wall, folding into floor, slipping back gradually to fit the diminishing zoning envelope. With each change of direction the ribbon alternately enfolds a production or presentation space, thus combing together the major program divisions and populations of the building (residents and visitors) as well as their diverse activities and speeds.The ribbon is sometimes sheared and slipped into alignment with a level above or below, thus, conjoining a production and presentation space. The building is designed as a system of controlled contamination.

The Software I use is: Bonzai3D+ Solid thinking

1)Bonzai3d has radial bending tools, by which makes the deformation
control.
Bonzai3d could be used for modifying the model by different forms,
for example, by object, by surface or by curves.
Bonzai3d could be used for the surface editing, such as offset

Discription:
The Nakagin Capsule Tower designed by Kisho Kurokawa and located in Shimbashi, Tokyo.The Tower was composed by prefabric capsules.Those capsules in different positionsof the tower have different altitudes.The altitudes are relating to the positions of platforms in the traffic core, which combine with those prefabric units.And most of the orientations of capsules were fixed in existing building ,only those capsules in the corner of each tower have uncertained orientations.

To re-modeling and generating the nakagin capsule tower ,I firstly studied the interesting building logic of Kisho Kurokawa.I conclude the idea of matabolism is qute faciniting .Although the tower looks very complicated, but the logic is quite clear and easy. Therefore ,with the clear and easy logic , the model could be generated and modeled quickly by several simple operations of grasshopper and sketchup 7.

Davis Langdon carried out the project management, Sir Robert McAlpine and Alfred McAlpine did the construction and MERO designed and built the biomes. Land Use Consultants led the masterplan and landscape design. The project took 2½ years to construct and opened to the public on 17 March 2001.

Brief Description of Esplanade Theater:

The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is a waterside building located on six hectares of waterfront land alongside Marina Bay near the mouth of the Singapore River, purpose-built to be the centre for performing arts for the island nation of Singapore. The library@esplanade is located on the third floor of the building. There are outdoor performing centres, and retail and food space at the Esplanade Mall. There is an outdoor open space on the fourth floor of the building.

The building was designed by two architectural firms working in conjunction: by DP Architects (DPA) of Singapore and the London-based Michael Wilford & Partners (MWP).

Computer program used for the Re-modeling:

We have used Rhino and ParaCloud to regenerate the model of the Esplanade theater. My software for this course is ParaCloud. ParaCloud deals with pattern modeling. The Esplanade theater has a specific “pattern” of its shading devices. If we import a “mesh” surface ( in case of Esplanade it is the glass shell) in Paracloud and populate the “component” (in case of Esplanade it is The shading device) on the mesh, it would be convenient to get a good result accordingly. That is why we used ParaCloud to regenerate this building. We used rhino to create the”mesh” and the “component” because it is easy and perfect to get a “faceted” surface using UV degree and point count in Rhino. That is why we used Rhino as well.

The Eden Project is a visitor attraction in the United Kingdom, including the world's largest greenhouse. Inside the artificial biomes are plants that are collected from all around the world. The project is located in a reclaimed Kaolinite pit, located 2 kilometers (1.25 mi) from the town of St Blazey and 5 kilometers (3 mi) from the larger town of St Austell, Cornwall
The complex comprises a number of domes that house plant species from around the world, each dome emulating a natural biome. The domes are made out of hundreds of hexagons.

I used firstly SketchUp 7 because that was the program I analyzed during the first part of this semester, so I wanted to experiment with the soap bubble interface, which is an easy way to generate shapes especially domes which have an engineer character.
-Second program I use was Grasshopper since I could by using a specific definition easy generate the hexagons of the same size all over Domes surfaces.

RHIKNOWBOT is a knowledge based and component-based parametric modelling-technology based on Rhino3d for construction detail models of building facades, roofs and other building assemblies.

solidThinking is mainly used for industrial design by manufacturing industries and professional designers and architects but it also finds a user base in computer graphics.

Modeling is based on NURBS curves and surfaces and, thanks to the program's Construction History or Construction Tree, any modeled shape immediately updates while objects, points, or parameters are modified. All the steps involved in construction are saved inside the file and is accessible at any time allowing the designer to experiment and invent new shapes. solidThinking also features polygonal modeling with subdivision surfaces.

SketchUp is a 3D modeling program designed for architects,
civil engineers, filmmakers, game developers, and related professions.
First released in August 2000 as a general purpose 3D content creation tool, with the tagline "3D for Everyone" and envisioning a software "that would allow design professionals to draw the way they want by emulating the feel and freedom of working with pen and paper in a simple and elegant interface, that would be fun to use and easy to learn. Google acquired SketchUp on March 14, 2006, attracted by SketchUp work developing a plug-in for Google Earth. Since then in the Goggle Earth itself can be found thousands of 3d models of important buildings all around the world which help getting a better understanding of space in 3dimensions.

SketchUp version 7 the latest version has incorporated new interfaces some of them you will find described in this booklet.
